Exegesis

As an assignment for my unit web communications unit at Curtin University, I have been asked to create a ‘web presence’. I have created a central node and 3 linked nodes to create my presence on the web. A requirement for the assignment is for there to be a continuous theme throughout my web presence and to demonstrate this theme by my layout, design and other aspects of my nodes. I have been extremely exited about this assignment as its very practical and relevant to today’s current demand for people the Western culture to have a web presence.

    I chose to use a blog as my central node, on the site e- blogger. Blogs have become extremely popular web 2.0 sites because of there interactivity; this is why I chose to create a blog. They give the creator a chance to express and share either information about themselves or something they are interested in, to society. Rebecca Blood states in her article “weblogs: a history and perspective” (2000), “I strongly believe in the power of weblogs to transform both writers and readers from "audience" to "public" and from "consumer" to "creator.” I found a blog an effective way to create my presence online as the simple yet effective structure of a blog is best suited to me. The site provides you with an already structured layout which you can modify to a certain extent. You can add different gadgets, swap positions of certain tools on the site and remove or add different tools you wish to be seen.

    Fashion is my chosen theme that I have incorporated throughout this web presence. I am extremely interested in fashion and every thing to do with it. It is an effective theme to use for my web presence as it already has quite a big presence online and many fashion lovers have or follow blogs. Blogs are a simple and great way to upload new information about current fashion trends, by being able to upload videos, photos and write a post to go with it. Fashion is a fairly broad theme that allows me to express many different aspects that I love about it. These include the industry, current trends, past trends, famous designers, models and many more. The layout of my blog is very simple to create a page which is pleasing to the eye. There are not too many gadgets, a side colomn and a simple title at the top of the page. I have used a black and white colour scheme as to not attract away from my posts of fashion photos. This colour scheme is very elegant and in the style of Coco Chanel.

    For the three linked nodes I have chosen Twitter, Youtube and Delicious, as they can all be associated with fashion. Since Twitter was created in 2006 a huge fashion presence has been constructed on it, as many famous people in the industry have created accounts to share tweets with their followers. These people include models Cindy Crawford and Jessica Stam (Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship, 2007). Fashion magazines also use Twitter to share information about their magazines and current fashion information, for example the fashion magazine Elle UK. I have also chosen Youtube as one of my nodes as Youtube has a broad number of fashion related videos on the site. I can also create my own Youtube account and add all the fashion videos I am interested in onto my page, which is linked to my blog page for my readers to view. My third node is Delicious a book marking site which allows me to create my own account and bookmark all my favourite fashion sites for my readers to view.

    For this assignment I have incorporated my love for fashion by creating a fashion blog, where I will upload my favourite current fashion trends and photos that I have taken. I have linked the three sites Twitter, Youtube and Delicious to my blog for my readers to view my fashion trend on all of these sites. This assignment has given me great insight into the extent of how an online presence can benefit someone trying to get a message across, in my case my love for fashion.

the beginning...

I am currently studying mass communications at curtin university and as an assignment in my web communications unit I am required to create an "online presence", intern I created a blog. I look forward to be able to share my love for fashion to you all... x
